How combating breast melanoma changed one senator's life - KMVT - KMVT

WASHINGTON (grey DC) -- Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., is melanoma free 12 months after going through medication for breast cancer.

The senator learned that cancer would not have a party affiliation. fighting the ailment capability accepting well wishes from fellow Democrats, Republicans and even her critics.

"Even a few of my haters on Twitter took time out of calling me names and stated truly superb things and that they were praying for me," said McCaskill.

The senator says she never realized just how many ladies battle breast cancer, until she needed to face the challenge herself.

"Now all over i am going someone kind of offers me the secret handshake and hugs me. and that i feel like I even have a whole new family unit of these outstanding girls who've traveled the identical direction that I actually have," pointed out McCaskill.

About one in eight U.S. women will boost invasive breast cancer over the direction of her lifetime. McCaskill says early detection turned into key to her a success treatment.

The senator continues to be taking medication. It comes with some side effects that she joked about, "excellent information for an older girl to hear that it's going to make it hard for me to shed pounds. but it really is a small expense to pay when it comes to being melanoma free," she observed.

Congress continues to debate fitness care reform and McCaskill is the use of her firsthand journey as motivation to battle for other patients.

"We should be very cautious about gutting preventative features, very careful about how we deal with preexisting situations," she spoke of.

And even for a magnificent u.s. senator, cancer has a method of inserting things in point of view.

The senator calls her adventure combating breast cancer one of the most uplifting moments in her career, and she's going to keep at it. McCaskill says she plans to run for re-election in 2018.
